Despite the slow improvement in air quality, air pollution especially in European urban areas is one of the main health dangers which causes illnesses and, as stated by the European Agency for the Environment, causes over 500,000 premature deaths each year.

Moreover, a new document written by the Agency states that climate changes, with its dramatic related records, are leading to a far-reaching impact on the ecosystem and economy, as well as on health and wellness.
The costs of climate related damages have been estimated, since 1980, to reach € 400 billion euro, with a particularly negative impact on the Mediterranean area.
In this devastating situation, the EU government, from Brussels has initiated infringement penalties against Italy, for excesses over the minimum limits for nitrogen dioxide and PM10 which could lead to a maxi-fine of up to a billion euro.
