USA-China, slight reduction of emissions

The U.S. and China have reached an agreement to reduce emissions of greenhouse gas.

Obama has set the bar between 26% and 28% by 2025. Xi Jinping announces an increase in the use of energy from sources other than fossil fuels, raising the quota of renewable energy from 10 to 20% by 2030. It is an important concession for China, which produces 30% of the emissions worldwide, but for the first time recognizes the problem.

Unfortunately, however, the Republicans – who now have the majority also in the Senate – are contrary to any agreements on climate and, for Beijing, it is a “political” agreement more than anything else. It will allow China, responsible for 29% of the world emissions, to continue to increase them for 16 years.

The goal of reducing global warming by the two degrees it has increased with respect to the preindustrial era is impossible, at best it will rise to three – observes Sergio Castellari, Italian director of IPCC – causing irreversible effects like the melting of the Greenland ice pack. For Italy it is essential to work on climate change. The Mediterranean is a sensitive, vulnerable area and it is essential to take action.
