Babies in the car: an update of the two technical rules, UN ECE R44 and R129, of transportation systems regulations which adopt parameters including the weight and the height of the baby has entered into effect.

The basic concept is the one stated by art. 172 of the Driving Code which says that children under 1.50 mt must be secured to the seat with an approved retention system adequate for the children’s weight. If people are found without using the proper car seat, they could be fined from € 80 up to € 323 euro and a curtailment of 5 points from their driving license. In case of violation recurrence, after two fines within two years, the driving license will be suspended from a 15-day to 2-month period.

The changes now only involve mainly child carseat producers. It is mandatory to substitute the obsolete models, which are those approved under the European law ECE R44/01 and ECE R44/02. Makes and models which should not have been used already for quite some time. These new rules pertain mostly to seat boosters, car seats without the back portion, used by kids that weight between 15 to 36 kg which allow them a correct usage of the seat belt. The law now states that children up to 125 cm tall must have car seats with the back as well regardless of their weight. Therefore, the seat boosters without the back part are allowed only for children taller than 125 cm, but before the summer even their sales should be stopped.
