Europe Yes, Europe No!

In ancient times they referred vaguely to the lands north of
Greece and the Alps, inhabited by “barbarians” as “Europe”. It
wasn’t until Charlemagne’s time that a cultural, unifying
concept of the continent began to take shape, but for another
1000 years it was only a bloody battlefield. After World War II
the European nations attempted an union that was more economic
than political, to prevent the risk of further devastating
conflicts. In this spirit the European Coal and Steel
Community (ECSC), the Pact of Rome and the EEC were born. Now
European citizens can vote for the European Parliament, and many
politicians are riding the wave of popular discontent for their
own domestic purposes. Europe has been and remains
unquestionably fundamental for all the environmental regulations
it has enacted. Let’s hope the sterile protest doesn’t win.
