After being capital of three empires in the past – the western Roman Empire, the Gothic Empire of King Theodoric and the Byzantine Empire in Europe – Ravenna is a candidate to become the Capital of European culture in 2019.

Theodoric, King of the Goths, died in Ravenna, struck by lightning, as the story goes, while bathing during a thunderstorm. The most well-preserved monument of the city, its age-old history and ancient legends make Ravenna a unique city, with the loveliest mosaics in the world and 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Even the local cuisine is famous, with characteristics that distinguish it from the traditional regional cuisine, with its tortelli filled with cheese and the piadina Romagnola made using a different recipe.
