There’s a bio LPG!

Together with bio-methane, a renewable fuel obtained from agricultural processing residues and waste, there is and will also be also a bio LPG. According to a report drawn up by Wlpga (World Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association) in 2018 the bio LPG produced was about 200 kilo-tonnes/year (200 thousand t), just under 0.1% of all LPG production.

About half is branded as such for sale, the other half is consumed as fuel gas or LPG.
Almost all current production is bio-propane, produced as a by-product of bio-oils employed in producing bio-diesel. The modern bio refining processes is aimed at producing advanced bio-fuels – see Eni’s bio refinery in Venice and Gela – making it possible to count on quantities of bio LPG (Green LPG) destined to increase over time. This will be in line with the general development objectives of bio-fuels: to date the national production of bio LPG – and the related release for consumption that already takes place in the current distribution network – can be estimated at between 80,000 and 100,000 tons (source Assogasliquidi/Federchimica).
